Climate Change: Global Citizens Have a Bigger Role than Legislatures to Heal Climate

by Eli Mshomi

The changing climate and its drastic consequences on humanity are no secret anymore. While the United Nations is busy threatening the world for the rapid decline of the environment, countries worldwide are busy ignoring the alarms, despite visible and imminent threats.

The United Nations, many a time, issued a warning that in order to stop the global temperature rise in times to come, the world has to exhale 46% less carbon dioxide than what it is doing right now.

It means that almost half of the global industries that are dispersing the greenhouse gases have to be shut down or be shifted towards alternate technologies.

However, seeing the pervasive trend and the progression, it is estimated that instead of decreasing by 46%, the world is expected to increase the emissions by 16%.

This could eventually lead to a 2.7-degree Centigrade rise in temperature by 2030 from pre-industrial times that could have drastic consequences for generations to come.

As Earth dooms with the prevalence of Carbon Dioxide in the environment. The global citizenry need to play its role to curb these gases in atmosphere.

United Nations Signals are Concerning Mankind

The United Nations warning is a fair sign to worry for global stakeholders as the world moves into the post-pandemic times.

Most of the countries are already facing drastic lockdown measures and falling economies due to the unfolding pandemic.

As the world has to make a choice between reopening of economies or curbing it in favor of climate, no country will embrace the unemployment regimes of not opening the industrial sector.

This is certainly a vulnerable approach toward the already deteriorating environment, but countries have no other option. The world is strangled between a rock and a hard place, and it seems to favor employment instead of climate.

Nonetheless, as the practical measures to curb the devastating climate remain bleak, the hope to mend Earth also remains lifeless.

Deforestation is damaging greenery in the world right now which is one of the causes of many climate-related disasters.

US Citizens: Not Willing to Heal Climate as Much as Europeans Do

The global citizenry is willing to contribute their bits toward healing the environment, at least in theory. In fact, people from Europe are more concerned about the changing climate compared to the United States.

As per the surveys, 72 % of global citizens are ready to change the way they live to help the climate. However, in the United States, the opinion of people is based on the party lines. Conservatives, as expected, are not ready to change their behavior, as only 45 percent of them voted in favor of changing their way of living to favor the climate.

However, on the left side of the political spectrum, almost 94 percent of people are ready to change their behavior to heal the climate.

Climate change most often goes beyond legislative actions and requires efforts from civil society. If citizens are reluctant to play their role, there is no way that the world is going to meet the required emissions curb. Nonetheless, the need for the hour is to raise awareness from political podiums so that citizens can change their opinions.

It is pertinent to note here that most of the time, Republican supporters are reluctant to embrace the climate change doctrine despite visible consequences.

This ignorance should be stopped, and the effort needs to be led by the highest leadership. 2030 is too near to curb carbon emissions by 46 percent, and if the issue is neglected this time, the time to mourn shall come soon.

Plantation drives can help the world in regaining the lost status as they can curb carbon dioxide presence in the atmosphere.

Planting Trees: The Single Most Effective Solution to Curb Climate Change

Tree planting regimes should be prompted religiously so that the carbon could be captured to the maximum possible extent. The pace of tree planting should be at least doubled compared to what wildfires are already destroying.

This is due to the fact that the changing climate is already causing natural disasters, including wildfires and flooding, which endanger the already existing forests.

If the solution is neglected, as it is being done right now, the wildfires will soon eat most of the Earth’s greenery.

Final Thoughts

The alarm bells which the relevant authorities are sounding these days on climate change are a matter of grave concern, to say the least.

The UNICEF organization has already estimated more than one billion children are on the verge of disaster due to this change. The world needs to awaken, not only from the legislative perspective but also from the civilian sector.

As this climate danger exposes the world to a big danger, people of color are vulnerable to extreme situations.

While many countries are subsidizing green energy alternatives using already existing technology, these efforts are not inspiring enough to reach the green world goal of 2030.
